communications and new media

Christmas is upon us nearly again. Rather than a formal meetup, it’s time we went for some dinner and a bit of fun!c_flags
I’ve pulled a few strings and got us some tables at ‘The Royal Commonwealth Society’ members club. It’ll be a three course dinner for £21.50, all in a rather relaxed, modern setting. Having worked with them and become a member recently myself, trust me it’ll be good! Drinks are extra, but reasonably priced.

Location:

The Royal Commonwealth Society
25 Northumberland Avenue
London WC2N 5AP

Closest tube: Charing Cross / Embankment

Time: Thursday 10th December, 6:30pm arrival

Unfortunately we’re limited to 20 places. First come, first served.

You need to be a member of the London Communicators and Engagement group on LinkedIn or Facebook group to participate.

p.s If the restaurant isn’t packed, there’ll be a surprise at the end.

See you there!

In October, around 60 members of the London Communicators and Engagement group showed up to participate in an evening of cabaret, theatre and workshopping. A lot of people gave up their time and effort to make the event really special.

I just had the video in from Roland, MD, Big Wheel Theatre company. Take a look below. If you can’t see it, click here.

This month is all about ‘Emotional Intelligence’ and being able to maximise your effectiveness as either an in-house communicator orPicture from http://paulaamarshall.wordpress.com/2009/09/01/the-importance-of-eq-training-in-the-workplace/ external consultant. It’ll be facilitated by Claudie Plen, Director, Edge Thinking.

Event synopsis:

Communicators and the Glass Ceiling?
Is there a glass ceiling for communicators? Internal communicators (and consultants) are perfectly placed to have a holistic understanding of the needs of an organisation and its people. Research shows that emotional intelligence is the most important trait for leaders to possess, so why are professional communicators (often the most emotionally intelligent people in an organisation) so often left out of the leadership loop? What difference would it make if you could exercise more influence over your leadership team’s decision making, and if you could begin to influence thought leadership over the organisation as a whole? As a communicator you are uniquely placed to understand the impact policy has on internal structures, but often you don’t get the chance to act on the information you have…

This session will help you to:

• Improve your influencing skills
• Boost your confidence when communicating upwards
• Increase your understanding of how to frame your objectives to appeal to leadership’s finance and strategy objectives
• Understand the business case for communications, and how your skills can support organisational change, increase productivity, performance and efficiency.
• Get what you want from management, and ideally to increase your budget.

If you’d like to have the session tailored a little to your specific needs, drop meetup facilitator ‘Claudie Plen’ a mail on claudie@REMOVETHISedgethinking.co.uk. All requests will be treated in confidence and you will not be named at the event!

A message from the Long Dog … Friends? Sure – I’ve got loads. Hundreds. 357 to be precise, not to mention 170 business contacts j_b and around 750 people who like to hear from me a dozen times a day. Do I spend my day wasting time with them? Sometimes. Then again I look to them to tell me what’s going on in the world, answer my business questions, read my blog and generate new ideas.

Most of my friends and colleagues are in real offices - maybe your offices - sharing information, informing opinion, making deals (ours and other people’s) breaking deals (ours and other people’s) and doing what humans do best – communicating. But this time at the speed of light, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and on every continent on our shrinking planet.

So what are you and your organisations going to do about it? Come and play or hope it all goes away before it becomes your problem? The fact you’re reading this here tells me you’re no ostrich but I bet you’d like to know more – so you share it with your friends, bosses and clients. See where I’m going with this?

Jason Buck (a.k.a. The Long Dog) has teamed up with Big Wheel theatre company to produce an evening of theatrical workshopping, looking at the skills, thrills, possibilities and pitfalls of social networking.

There’ll be interactive exercises; performances by actors to illustrate the issues we’re all facing; you’ll eavesdrop on situations that reflect your own concerns about social networking and the fundamental changes in communications that are going on at the moment: information overload, opportunities for business relationships, problems of misuse of company time or equipment, and dealing with feedback spawned by enemies and friends alike.

All this in the atmosphere of a fun cabaret evening with some mystery tours thrown in

The world and communication has changed; the people haven’t.

Be entertained, be educated, be social in …’Carry on up the Network’.

The Clerkenwell Theatre (next to the Holy Redeemer Church) 26 Exmouth Market, Clerkenwell, London EC1R 4QE

Time: Arrive at 6:30pm prompt and finishes at 8:30pm, Monday 26th of October

Event synopsis:

Fact - 250 million active Facebook users and growing, 6 million active Twitter users and growing, 47 active LinkedIn users and growing, this comms group: 270 members and growing.

Social networking is the buzz word du jour for professional communicators, their organisations and their clients. Jason Buck and Big Wheel theatre company have teamed up to produce an event looking at the people and comms skills behind Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and the other ‘tools’. This is a practical event, but just as importantly, an entertaining one.

Collaborating on this, Jason and Big Wheel’s objectives are to leave the attendees with ‘Wow! I’ve never been to anything like this’ but also ‘And I learned these things…’. Over half a century’s combined communications and theatrical experience presented in an original format – just sign up, learn something new and enjoy yourself at the same time.

ModComms Limited are both organiser and sponsor of the London Communicators and Engagement Group. (Here’s a Facebook group if that’s what you prefer).

We’ll be kicking off meet ups properly on September 15th. This CMB_25_LOGOsmall time, it’s all about ’style over substance’? Joining us will be Angela Weyers, a professional image consultant. We’ll be finding out the effect of appearance on others, partly thinking about those who represent your organisation externally, but also giving you personal insight into what could work for you personally!

So, details are as follows:

Location:

Vault Europe

London SE1 1YW

Closest tube: London Bridge

Date / Time:

Tuesday 15th September.

6:30pm arrival. 7.00pm start. 8.30pm finish, then afterwards at a local ‘hostelry’!

Event synopsis:

Style over Substance?

If 93% of how we are judged initially is based on the way we present ourselves (rather than the substance of what we are saying), then getting our image right in business is vitally important. Angela Weyers is an Image Consultant with Colour me Beautiful, Europe’s leading image consultancy. She will be telling us why it is important to get our (and our employee’s) image right and how to do so. Expect to learn a bit about yourselves individually and have some fun along the way!
